Rust is as fast as C with free security you get. Runtime enforcement of memory security can cost you quite a bit! From the linked paper, “Automated C-to-Rust translation reports four to five percent runtime overhead, but on small programs that avoid dynamic allocation and complex aliasing… measures what memory safety costs as a function of the mechanism that enforces it, across twelve build configurations of ten languages and fourteen workloads,… including hardware performance counters and a compiler-enforced unsafe-construct count of zero throughout. Across the controlled twelve benchmarks, hand-written safe Rust runs at a median of 0.99 to 1.03 times C and within 1.03 to 1.10 times its peak memory, while every configuration enforcing safety at runtime… Their memory cost is uneven: 1.6 to 1.9 times Rust for Go and C# NativeAOT, 5.7 times for Swift, and an order of magnitude or more for the four just-in-time configurations..”
A few friends visiting this week. Planned a run and dinner tonight.
“Bainbridge studied what happened when factories and industrial systems automated the work of blue-collar operators. The findings were paradoxical and revealed that the more you automate a process, the more critical the human operator becomes during the rare moments automation fails and the less practice they get, and the worse they become at exactly those interventions. Automation, which was inherently designed to remove humans from the loop, left them with the worst possible job, i.e., long stretches of passive monitoring punctuated by rare, high-stakes crises they were increasingly unprepared for.” quoted here.
I am exploring Zoho Table to manage my finances/budgeting. HDFC Bank is no longer syncing with Wallet app! Its on-again off-again ex with HDFC. So I am going old school. Import csv into zoho table and manage and tag expenses myself. Notion is another option to do so but I find Zoho Table handling large CSV much better. The grouping feature in Zoho Table is beta and not as good as Notion (can’t group by month of a date yet!).
